Hospitals
Hospital stays can be daunting and often represent a loss of agency, with medical treatment necessarily taking priority. Music therapy delivered at the bedside or in day rooms can offer respite from the fear, pain and boredom which patients of all kinds may experience. Engaging with music, actively or receptively, brings comfort, enjoyment, and the opportunity for creative choice into the hospital environment, reducing anxiety and prompting emotional resilience to support healing. For long-stay patients, music therapy allows for continued personal growth and development, nurturing holistic wellbeing even in the face of illness. We have experience of delivering music therapy in paediatric, adolescent and adult hospital settings, including acute, palliative and mental health work.
Music therapy can…
- help alleviate the discomfort and anxiety associated with a hospital stay
- offer opportunities to retain a sense of choice and agency
- provide an enjoyable and creative way to spend time, even when ill
- allow fears to be expressed, heard and responded to with empathy.
