Children
Musical play is essential to healthy development and when illness, disability, difference or trauma have created extra challenges in a child’s life, music therapy can promote healing and transformation. We work with children of all ages, with a wide variety of needs and requirements, helping them to express themselves and explore the world around them, without the pressure of words. Music therapists are trained to support children to process issues through musical play and interaction, improvised song lyrics and shared listening, in ways which impact their confidence and wellbeing beyond the session. We deliver sessions in all types of schools and nurseries, and in home and healthcare settings, according to where the child will feel most comfortable. We regularly collaborate with families and other professionals involved in the child’s care.
Music therapy can...
- assist in developing social and communication skills, including speech
- alleviate anxiety and depression, encouraging the expression of difficult feelings
- encourage movement, muscle flexibility and coordination by using music to motivate and support physical development
- help in processing loss, trauma and pain
- offer a sense of agency at a time when children may feel disempowered, by giving choice, opportunity and control through musical play.
