Neurologic Music Therapy

Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is a treatment technique which uses music to support neuro-rehabilitation in speech/language, cognition and sensory motor domains. People experiencing dementia, brain injury, neurological conditions, stroke and developmental disorders can all benefit from NMT interventions. This therapeutic application of music can rehabilitate the damaged human nervous system in areas of dysfunction, improve mood and functional outcomes.

Neurologic Music Therapy:

  • is a highly structured outcome-led approach
  • views music as a neurological language based on musical perception, performance and production
  • enhances daily living activities by using musical exercises to meet non-musical goals
  • is a transformational model where musical techniques inform practical targets for the individual

NMT is endorsed by the World Federation of Neurological Rehabilitation, the European Federation of Neurological Rehabilitation Societies and the International Society for Clinical Neuro-Musicology. NMT uses 21 different techniques derived from scientific evidence-based research. These techniques include:

  • TIMP (Therapeutic Instrument Musical Performance) uses music with a strong pulse to support the client's movement, mobility and strength.
  • MACT (Musical Attention Control Training) can increase different types of attention through use of directed musical interventions.
