Brain Injury
The impact of a traumatic brain injury following an accident, having suffered a stroke or being diagnosed with a neurodegenerative illness, is life-changing. Physical, emotional and cognitive symptoms can have significant long-term effects. Because music reaches into both sides of the brain, it is particularly well-suited as a therapeutic modality to help, offering the potential to repair and support the growth of neural connections. Music therapy can increase motivation to engage in physical rehabilitation and also offers a safe space for processing the emotional aspects of what has happened. Music is often woven into our sense of identity and can be something to lean on during the recovery journey, including therapeutic songwriting. Some people may also benefit from the functional focus of Neurologic Music Therapy.
Music therapy can...
- enhance physical rehabilitation, by motivating engagement
- support speech recovery, by activating neural networks
- offer emotional support to come to terms with the impact of brain injury
- encourage rebuilding of self-confidence and identity, using creative methods to look to the future.
