Premature Babies

Early separation from the in-utero sound of a mother’s heartbeat followed by the noisy surroundings of an intensive care unit can make a premature baby’s environment traumatic and difficult to assimilate, impacting their developmental trajectory. We are experienced at working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to offer sympathetic and sensitive support both premature babies and their parents, as they begin to navigate the world together. We can also continue this support once the baby goes home, to ease the transition.  Improved sleep, breathing and feeding for babies, and decreased stress levels in parents, have all been documented as positive outcomes for NICU babies supported by music therapy.

Music therapy can...

  • nurture attachment, engagement, comfort and soothing through songs and lullabies, encouraging parent/carer involvement
  • promote optimal physical and neurological growth by attuning to the baby’s needs
  • replicate womb or heartbeat sounds to support acoustic adjustment
  • help parents to relax and feel safe, to recover from the experience of a traumatic birth and to trust that they are able to care for their baby.
