In memory of John Whenham

We are sorry to report the death in August 2026 of John Whenham, a former trustee of Music Therapy Works and the Emeritus Professor and former head of the Department of Music at the University of Birmingham. John gave over 40 years of dedicated service to the University and was instrumental in establishing the wonderful reputation that the Music Department currently enjoys.

John was a trustee of Music Therapy Works for over 10 years from 2014 until December 2024 and he was a vital member of the board, bringing real insight and dedication to his role. He supervised the first ever Music Therapy PhD in the UK - it was characteristic of his generosity, curiosity and intellectual acumen that he was prepared to supervise research in an area beyond his own specialism, because he believed that Music Therapy matters.

We were so immensely grateful to him for staying beyond his 9-year term whilst new trustees were being brought on board, this dedication to Music Therapy Works illustrating how John selflessly put the interests of the charity first. His work as a trustee made a significant contribution to the legacy of Music Therapy Works and we will always be thankful for the work he did for our board of trustees, helping to guide it forward with real vision and commitment.
